Athletics Ontario 2015 Provincial Cross Country Championships
Lions Valley Athletics only had a few entries for this championships event and David Gallant produced the best results for the day. Kevin J Smith was a DNS for the Masters 5KM race and Mike Gill was not at 100% after feeling some discomfort after his great race at the OMA Sunnybrook 8KM. Mike still attempted the start and took each lap one at a time but the discomfort got worse and Mike felt it best to step away just before reaching 6KM in the Senior Men 10KM.
David, although very modest about it, ran well on the challenging course in the Youth Boys 6KM event. This was the largest field of the day almost reaching 150 participants and it included almost all of the top competitors from OFSAA! Athletics Canada recently added the Youth Boys category to the Canadian Cross Country Championships, to be held in Kingston November 27, 2015.
On a side note: I was using a new telephoto zoom lens for the first time and managed to capture some much better photos where the runners are the largest part of the photo, not the background. Let me know you’re thoughts if you notice a difference.
David Gallant – Youth Boys 6KM
David`s strategic starting location on the line allowed him another good start preventing him from getting caught up in the choas of the first 200m before a right turn. The 6KM course would start with the flat 1KM loop of the fields, followed by 2 of the undulating & challenging 2KM loops and then another 1KM loop into the finish. Falling into a more cautious rhythm for the first 2.5KM, David was running his race without letting everything happening around him distract him. After that David became a runner transformed as he just kept passing runners and moving up in the field. Follow the race photos and the bib numbers of those around him and all except one finished behind him.
In the final 1KM as he circled the fields someone called out the current placings giving him 105th. Unacceptable for David, a determination to break the top 100 grew and eventually became greater than his tired and sore legs as he passed 5 runners in the last 400m. He passed one last competitor in the final sprint to the line pushing for 99th but once results were posted he finished with a time of 23:25 over the 6KM distance in 100th position, which was just off of his last push effort for 99th. Its a solid time on a challenging course and his longest cross country season to date and he perfectly demonstrated how staying focused on a goal can be done when you`re tired sore and spent! Congratulations on being the top Lions Valley Athletics runner at AO XC Championships!
