It was a cold and windy day for racing with the Women running 5K and the Men running 10K. Kelly-Lynne ran a strong race representing the University of Waterloo Warriors Alumni. It was one of the most competitive races at the Don Mills Open in both the Womens & Mens events because the Waterloo Warrirors will be hosting the OUA XC Championship at the end of the month. This was an opportunity to test the 5K & 10K courses before the championship. This site which also hosted OFSAA XC in 2014 is a challenging rolling course with many turns for the 2.5K Loop. The Laurentian's Katie Wismer took the top spot along with top team. Congrats to our sole Lions Valley Athletics member in the womens race, Kelly-Lynne Spettigue and her 30th place finish that proved she can still hold her own against some of the best women in the OUA!
Mike Gill & Kevin Smith both started the Mens 10K race representing the Alumni of Windsor and Waterloo. Soon after the women had finished the men started their 4 laps of the course with the wind still howling. The race went out relatively slow with Mike up near the front of the pack and Kevin happily in the middle. The undulating course and sharp turns put a lot of strain on your calves and playing it cautiously, Mike decided 3 laps was enough to keep any injuries from getting worse (especially after having a strong race the week before). It was a Windsor Alumni that won the mens race and the Windsor Lancers took the top team spot. Kevin trucked on through all 4 laps and finished with a time of 38:13 for his first 10K in well over 2 years and his first opportunity to compete in the new Loins Valley Athletics race gear!
Thanks to Sean Patterson who was out cheering us all on and taking some pictures. Next year he plans to be back on the course representing Laurier at the Don Mills Open.
